Web Server and Security Engineering

Welcome to the Dembowski.net web server. This convoluted web page is really meant to be a place holder. Nothing to see really, move along.

This web server originally was a hobby for the Dembowski brothers to play around with. At that time (in 1997) simply getting sendmail performing it’s tricks was “cool”.

So much for cool. Now this server is running DNS for our domains, the primary mail server for the family, and is considered production by the family. Somehow this server has an SLA and at least two of us get ping’ed whenever we have an outage.

Each of us now work in different slightly different IT roles. Three of us work in financial companies in a security engineering role. The youngest brother works in software development but also for a financial company.

Security engineering is not what it used to be. In 1999 having firewall experience and knowing your way around a UNIX system meant you were above and beyond. In 2006 it appears that technical expertise is secondary to presentation. Terms such as “compliance”, “regulations”, and (shudder) “audit”  are repeated often and with very little understanding of what those terms are about.

That also means there are a lot of opportunities in compliance and audit; maybe a shift in career direction is in order.

These web pages have not maintained for years but can be found

For this front page I am using Wordpress. The web server component works but the built in editor drives me nuts. This post has been edited using the friendly BlogJet editor (which automagically puts in it’s link if you type the name).
